Wren Kelly
Details
Halifax native Wren Kelly has just finished work on her 6 track EP “Let Go,” recorded in Vancouver. Her electric style, and brilliant performance are highlighted in the debut single “Better Off,” the emotive ‘beat ballad’ that showcases Wren’s soul and range.
Written by Davor Vulama and Ava Kay (“Good As Gone” / Charlie), it’s a blistering 3 and a half minute storybook of a young girl breaking out of her shell. While there are obvious musical comparisons, it is infinitely Wren.
Her deep love for poetry and writing continues on the EP, having co-authored the title track with Sean Hosein (Jessica Simpson, 98 Degrees). Rachel Suter, and a collaboration with Matthew Tishler (BoA, Crystal Kay, Disney’s “Hellcats”) and Hipjoint’s Stef Lang are also included in the writer line up. Selections from the EP such as “Jump” have already been featured in CBC TV’s “Mr. D” and “U + I” has a key slot in the upcoming feature film “Clockwork Girl.
Wren attributes her start in music to her older sister who encouraged her to enter the regional competition for “The Next Star.” Wren quickly ascended to the final 16 contestants. Winning the regional competition in Halifax, she was off to Toronto, vying for the national crown against vocalists from across the country.
Enter Vancouver based writer/producer and arranger Davor Vulama, who’s credits include Juno Award winners Hedley and Loverboy, and a deep love for a huge pop song. Provided with a selection of CD’s to choose from, he was immediately struck by the quality of Wren’s voice. “She has it,” says Vulama, “and has real soul. You could hear the charisma the moment she sang.” The team was tasked to create a song for her to preform on the show in front of an audience of 15,000 people.
The collaboration created “If I Fall,” a mid tempo, uplifting pop song highlighting Wren’s soulful qualities. In short order, the song became a huge favorite of fans of the show both on iTunes and her social media pages. Released by Universal, her participation on the show highlighted that she was not just an enigmatic young woman coming of age in front of a camera. Unlike those who simply sang a song, her debut single was the dawning of her career as a songwriter. “Fall” was co-written by Wren, Davor, and Ava Kay (“Convicted” / Alisha Pillay).
Wren decided to continue her musical path and signed a contract with Chapter 2 Productions and its label imprint, DVP. Her A&R team includes industry veteran Vincent Degiorgio, who was also responsible for signing N Sync in the United States.
